Born in 1982, Mike Celona is an American video artist, photographer and musician who is interested in exploring the creative  possibilities of media beyond it's traditional forms. His experimental works generally deal with the interplay between technology and nature as well as the effects of media messages on our collective psyche.  More recently he has begun experimenting with live video mixing/performance, non-linear compositional structures and Glitch art.  In 2005 he graduated from Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts and in addition to his art projects works as a commercial editor in Rochester, NY.

Artist Statement:

I am primarily interested in using video as an expressive medium.  Having worked as a commercial editor, I often find it is often refreshing to utilize video in a manner that runs counter to it’s long-established function as a tool to convey pre-digested information and empty spectacle to a passive audience.  With that in mind, much of my work fully acknowledges and embraces the inherent artifice of the video image in the hopes that this (perhaps counter-intuitively) helps engender a more honest relationship between content producers, audiences and the technology that mediates them.  More recently I have begun experimenting with non-linear compositions and live video mixing as ways to evolve the viewing experience beyond limited running times and attention spans as well as adding an element of real-time improvisation to my work.

On a formal level, my work draws significant inspiration from Impressionist, Cubist, and Abstract Expressionist painting as well as silent film--the aesthetics of which I have found lend themselves well to contemporary reinterpretation and continued exploration within the video medium without having to fall back on retrograde notions of nostalgia for it’s own sake.  I am also heavily influenced by the works of early video artists such as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola and the Vasulkas as well as composer John Cage’s experiments with mathematics and random chance as compositional strategies.  These in addition to more recent styles such as Glitch and Mash-Up art as well as the countless VJs around the world who are currently adding an exciting element of fluidity and constant variation to the video medium have had a profound impact on my work as well.
